Turning up the heat


According to this CNN news article, astronaut Joe Tanner dropped a bolt and spring in space during a space walk. These things happen, I guess. But further down the article I came across this statement:
However, spacewalkers have a long history of losing material in space. In July, Discovery spacewalkers lost a 14-inch-long spatula that floated away.

I was a couple of sentences on from that before I suddenly realized what I'd just read. They lost a spatula in space.

What, exactly, was someone doing with a spatula on a space-walk? The only reasonable explanation I can think of is that the astronauts were doing what comes naturally to Guys wherever they are: Barbecue. What more reason would they need?

Really Useful Science: The microwave engine

Now this really is cool: Roger Shawyer, an engineer in south-east England has designed a new kind of engine for spacecraft that has no moving parts and doesn't require fuel. It's called the Emdrive and it uses microwaves inside a resonant cavity, so it only needs a source of electricity to power it.

Better still, Shawyer has built a working prototype and measurements indicate that it produces about the same amount of thrust as the ion engines that powered SMART-1.

There are apparently still some questions about the Emdrive but if everything pans out the first real applications are likely to be space probes - all that would be needed is solar panels to provide power.

It's also been suggested that if an Emdrive could be built using superconductor technology, a 1000-watt drive - about the power of a microwave oven - could lift a 3-tonne mass off the ground.

Really obvious I: The MacBeth Effect

Psychologists have proved that when we think we've done something wrong, we really do feel better after washing. The phenomenon has been called "The MacBeth Effect" in honour of Lady MacBeth's "out, damned spot" performance.

It strikes me that these guys have got too much time on their hands - after all, I think we all knew this to be true; hell, even Shakespeare knew it was true. As for practical applications, I can't think of a single one...

Really Obvious II: Snails' need for speed

Scientists at MIT have created a mathematical model of how snails move and proved that (wait for it) snails move faster on thin slime. I think Shakespeare could have told them that, too.

Pluto reclassification redux

The new planet definition that came from the IAU last month is under fire. It seems that by the strict interpretation of the definition, Jupiter isn't a planet (it hasn't cleared its orbit of smaller bodies such as the Trojan asteroids) and Earth may not be either (Earth is surrounded by small bodies such as Horseshoe asteroids). Also, the new definition excludes all the extra-solar planets that have been discovered over the last few years - the fact of which was one of the reasons a proper definition was needed in the first place.

The whole mess will probably have to wait until the next general meeting of the IAU in 2009 before it's all sorted out.

For my own part, I think the definition should basically be something like, if it's big enough to pull itself into a roughly spherical shape and it formed from the parent star's accretion disk, it's a planet.

Real Augmented Reality; Whack-a-Moon; Can Science and Religion talk?; Happy Labor Day


Augmented Reality Reality

A very interesting article in New Scientist describes how Eli Peli, an ophthalmologist and bioengineer at Harvard Medical School, has developed a pair of Augmented Reality specs to help people suffering from tunnel vision. The way I understand it, a tiny camera attached to the specs takes a wide-angle picture which is then processed to create something like a line drawing of the scene. This is then scaled down and superimposed over the wearer's field of vision, so that the tunnel-vision sufferer gets an overview of the wider scene. This allows the sufferer to locate objects outside their degraded field of view up to 75% faster.

Let's play Whack-a-Moon

Europe's SMART-1 probe is in orbit around the Moon, losing about a kilometre in altitude with each go-around and taking more and more detailed pictures as it gets closer to the surface. At the moment it's estimated that it'll hit sometime around 2:41am Central time Sunday but because its orbit is going to be a bit of a surface-grazer that could be off by up to five hours.

At the speed it hits there'll be enough energy released to create quite a flash, and because the craft has some unspent fuel aboard, there could also be a fireball at impact. If you have a good telescope or binoculars you may be able to see the result - the project scientists have estimated a flash of between 9th and 13th magnitude (so it won't be visible to the naked eye).

A bonus for Bill & Ted fans is that the impact point is estimated to be in the region of the Moon known as The Lake of Excellence, dude.

Can Science and Religion work together to save Humanity?

E. O. Wilson, the famous scientist and author, has put out a new book, "The Creation: An Appeal to Save Life on Earth". In it he argues that science and religion can and should work together to help avert our own extinction.

I hope he's right but I have to say that my experience of religious extremists leads me to believe that it really won't be that easy - there are too many fundamentalists who can't wait for the end of the world so that the worthy can be saved, and ready to help things along.

Labor Day misnomer

Why is it called Labor Day when most people won't be working? Anyway, this writer wishes all his readers a safe a happy holiday.

Warped Space 1: NASA hides what they're doing by telling everybody

Most conspiracy theories are pretty dumb, but some are plainly dumber than others. Here's one that came up in response to the news that NASA is having problems locating the original slow-scan videotapes of the Apollo missions: on a site called Allergic Reality¹, some goon wonders out loud what's on the tapes that NASA doesn't want us to see.

Here's a clue: Nothing, you dope. Nobody's been bothered about these tapes for over thirty years, and we wouldn't have even known about them if NASA hadn't said they were trying to find them. If there was something on them they didn't want seen, all they had to do was burn them and not say anything.

¹It may be that this site deliberately picked a name close to Augmented Reality™ in an attempt to confuse the public. I think we should be told...

Warped Space 2: Welcome to the Dwarf Planet Mickey Mouse

In the wake of yesterday's decision about the definition of the word "planet" comes another problem for the IAU. It turns out that with more trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) being discovered all the time (Wikipedia lists over 100 found since 1992), and at least a dozen of these being big enough to possibly be classified as Dwarf Planets, we don't have enough names for them all.

Seven of the nine eight planets (the exception being Earth) are named after Roman deities. Ceres and Pluto also get Roman names because at the time they were named, they were classed as planets. This scheme can't be extended to include Dwarf Planets because there aren't enough Roman deities to go round.

So an idea has come up from Stephen Maran, author of "Astronomy for Dummies": Sell the names to the highest bidder and use the money for education and science programs around the world.

While I applaud the idea of using the money for education, I can't help but have a nagging doubt. What would happen if...

  • ... The Disney Company bought up a Dwarf Planet and called it "Mickey Mouse"? Would that give them the right to rename Pluto as "Pluto™ - a Disney Planet"?

  • ... Sun Microsystems named a Dwarf Planet "Sun"?

  • ... Cadbury's bought three and called them "Mars", "Galaxy" and "Milky Way"?

  • ... and if Earth Shoe got in on the act, that would really confuse things.


Personally I think we need to think up some new names instead of recycling old ones. After all, when the Romans named Mars, what did they name it after? Nothing - they thought the name up from scratch. We should get a little imagination and think up our own. I hereby propose that 2003UB313 be henceforth known as "Drophfenjoter".

Update: I mentioned in an earlier post that the new "planet" definition might still be revised because of a certain amount of disagreement between astronomers. There's more about this today on New Scientist's Space Page.

More space news

Space News 1 - My Very Educated Mom Just Served Us Nachos

It's official, and all over the news so I'm not going into detail here: Pluto is no longer classified as a planet - it is now a "Dwarf Planet" along with Ceres, Charon, 2003 UB313 and others. This means that we now have eight planets in the solar system and the old mnemonic "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas" will have to be rewritten.

On the other hand the decision may not stand for too long - the astronomers who voted on the proposed definition account for only a small percentage of professional astronomers worldwide and there have been some fairly strong objections to the new definition.

Space News 2 - First evidence for Dark Matter

Observations of the Bullet Cluster have provided the first hard evidence for the reality of Dark Matter. The Bullet Cluster is actually two galaxies that are passing through each other in opposite directions (I'm simplifying a bit, but this is essentially correct). As they pass, the stars in the galaxies miss each other because of the huge spaces between them, but the gas clouds are much larger so they bump into each other and slow down. The result is a cloud of gas in the middle with the stars passing out of the gassy region.

Measurements of the mass distribution show that the majority of the mass stays with the stars and not the gas - even though there's a lot more "normal" matter in the gas than there is in the stars. This shows that the Dark Matter is associated with the stars and not the gas. This puts us a step forward in understanding what Dark Matter may actually be.

Space News 3 - Mariner 4 mystery may be solved

In 1965 Mariner 4 took the first close pictures of the surface of Mars. Its job done, it cruised the space between Mars and Earth - it didn't have enough fuel to go anywhere else, so it simply drifted along with nothing to do.

On September 15, 1969, something strange happened - for 45 minutes Mariner 4 was sandblasted by a storm of meteors more intense than any seen here on Earth. And that's where the mystery began, because nobody had any idea where these meteors could have come from.

Until now, that is. Paul Weigert of the University of Western Ontario may have the answer. The trail goes back to 1895, when well-known comet spotter Lewis Swift found a comet which, by convention, was subsequently named "1895 Swift". The comet was seen again in 1896, heading out of the inner solar system on a 5-year orbit, but was never seen again. When it didn't show up as expected it was presumed to have disintegrated and renamed "D/Swift" for short (the "D" prefix indicating a comet that has disintegrated or been destroyed).

Weigert suggests that D/Swift broke up shortly after the last sighting in 1896, becoming a stream of small particles following the original orbital path of the comet. In 1967 Mariner 4 crossed that orbit just as the bulk of the broken-up D/Swift was passing. The calculations aren't certain because D/Swift was only seen a couple of times over a century ago, so the orbit isn't accurately known, but the indications are certainly compelling.

Comets like D/Swift break up all the time, so it's highly likely that the space all around the Earth and Mars is filled with particle streams just like the one that Mariner hit. This is important to know, since plans are afoot to send more spacecraft to Mars over the next few years.

Space News 1 - Apophis: Only You Can Save The Earth

On April 13, 2029 an asteroid called 99942 Apophis will pass the Earth at a distance of about 20,000 miles - that's a little closer than our TV satellites and close enough that it'll be naked-eye visible from Europe, Africa and western parts of Asia.

The close approach to Earth will change Apophis' orbit, and nobody can be certain how it'll be affected. Seven years later - on April 13, 2036 - there is a slight but nevertheless very real chance that it will hit the Earth.

Apophis is about 1,000 feet across and estimated to weigh around 50 million tons. That's nothing like the size of the one that wiped out the dinosaurs - that one was about six miles across - but it's still estimated that if it hits, the blast will be equivalent to 65,500 Hiroshimas.

The chance it'll hit may be very slim but the danger it poses if it does hit is enough that some serious scientists, such as Apollo astronaut Rusty Schweickart, are urging that we need a plan to deal with it. I agree with this.

At this point in time the priority is to "tag" Apophis so that we can track its position precisely - that'll provide the data needed to get a much better idea of whether or not it'll hit in 2036 (or later - there are other close approaches in 2037 and 2054). If we find out that Apophis is going to hit, tagging will also provide vital position data that can be used in any attempts to deflect or even destroy it.

The Planetary Society just announced a $50,000 competition that anyone can enter. All you have to do is come up with an idea for how to tag Apophis. It's not as easy as it may sound; Apophis could be a big ball of gravel or small rocks, rather like Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, in which case fixing something to the surface won't work. We need ideas, hence the competition. The competition details aren't up on the web page yet but keep watching.

Space News 2 - We May Have More Planets Tomorrow

Tomorrow - August 24 - the International Astronomical Union will be voting on a new proposed definition of the word Planet. Depending on how it goes, the number of planets in our solar system may officially increase from nine to twelve sometime in the next thirty-six hours.

The way the definition stood a few days ago, the three new members of the planet family would be Ceres (currently considered an asteroid), Charon (Pluto's largest moon) and 2003 UB313 - a trans-Neptunian object larger than Pluto, the discovery of which was the main factor in deciding that we needed a proper definition of what a Planet is.

More news on this tomorrow when the result of the vote is out. However it goes, it's a fair bet that The Nine Planets website will need to be renamed.

Update: the proposal is still being reworked as discussions continue. At this time it looks like we may actually have less planets after tomorrow, as Pluto and Ceres may be reclassified as "dwarf planets". More tomorrow.

Space News 3 - The Moon Landing Tapes: they're not lost, we just don't know where they are

We've all seen the really poor quality video of Neil Armstrong stepping down onto the Moon's surface in 1969, and some of us have always wondered why the quality was so bad. It turns out that the original recordings were far better, and what we saw on TV was the way it was because it had to be filtered and converted to TV format on the fly.

So, what happened to the original high-quality recordings? It turns out they're sort-of missing. You see, with all that was going on in the space program at that time, the recordings were packed up and sent to Goddard Flight Center. Later they were sent to the National Archives, then in the 1970s they went back to Goddard. And that, presumably, is where they still are - except that the guys there have been looking for them for over a year without any success. NASA is fairly sure that the tapes are still there, and they're still looking, but time is running out because Goddard is closing down in a few weeks - and they have the only remaining equipment that can read the original tape format.

Let's hope the tapes are found and they're still readable. I for one look forward to seeing that video digitized, cleaned up and made available on DVD.

The high-speed Internet story - Latest

The Cable Dude came to the house last night and figured out the problem, which is that the signal goes through no less than three splitters between the point where it enters the house and the connection on the back of the modem, suffering a loss of about 11dB on the way.

To fix it, the cable company will be installing a dedicated line for the modem early next week. We'll just have to make do as-is until then, but thinking about it I don't have a problem with that - after all, even with these dropouts it's still better than the old 56k modem.

Tulsa Zoo gets it right after all

Following up on the last post, great news: after massive reaction from the public, the board reversed the decision and there won't be a creationism display in Tulsa Zoo after all. Read about it here.

The original vote in favour of the display was 3-1; the new decision came after a 3-1 vote the other way. The lone holdout was Mayor Bill LaFortune - which just goes to show that there should be something to protect us from getting uneducated people voted into positions of responsibility.

Tulsa Zoo heading drainwards...

I don't know who's worse - the creationist phuckwhits, or the Tulsa Park and Recreative Board. At least the first bunch have an excuse; many of them are too dumb or too lazy to pick up a book and actually read something about the subject they claim to be such experts on. But you'd think that the Tulsa Park and Recreative Board, who run Tulsa zoo, should know better.

Instead, it seems that the park board are either thick, or there's a creationist mole or two among them, or they're too chickenshit to fight for what's right, or they just don't care. I just got this from the Center for Inquiry:

For ten years, evangelical Christian Dan Hicks has been vexed by the Tulsa Zoo's statue of Ganesh (the elephant-headed god of Hindu lore). And for ten years, he's tried to get the zoo to represent his religious perspective too.

Now he's got his chance: in June 2005, the Tulsa Park and Recreative Board, which governs the zoo, voted to install a creationist exhibit in the zoo - not far from its exhibit on evolutionary science.

Don't they have any actual scientists working at Tulsa Zoo? (Zoo: short for Zoological Park, where you'd expect them to have at least one Zoologist on staff, right?) If so, what are they doing about this?

Facts and Theories and Lies

Let's get something straight: despite what you may be hearing from Kansas, evolution is a fact, not a theory.

Gravity is a fact. If gravity wasn't a fact, we'd know about it pretty damn quick - people, cars, patio furniture and so on detaching themselves from the ground and floating up into space would be a bit of a giveaway, I think. But there are several theories of gravity. Theories don't dispute the facts - a theory is an idea about the underlying causes that explains the facts. In this case, one theory is that all the atoms that make up matter emit particles called Gravitons that carry the gravitational force. The more matter, the more particles, and therefore more gravity. The Earth contains so much matter, six thousand million million tonnes of it, that the gravity it generates is pretty strong.

The graviton theory is just one of several theories about what makes gravity work. At most one theory can be the right one but they're all good theories - that is, they explain the facts and we can design experiments to test theories against observations. If an experiment shows a result that is not what the theory predicts, then that theory is wrong. We may need to make modifications to the theory, or discard it altogether in favour of another theory. What's important, in scientific terms, is that any good theory is falsifiable - that is, that it's possible to design an experiment that could prove the theory wrong.

Now this is important: while it's easy to break a theory by performing an experiment that proves it wrong, it is not usually possible to prove that any theory is correct. When an experiment shows the result that the theory would predict, that result supports the theory but does not prove it. In fact, the result of the experiment may be as predicted by several competing and incompatible theories (including theories that haven't been thought up yet); in that case the result of the experiment supports all those theories but doesn't prove any of them correct.

For the everyday we don't need to know exactly how something works to be able to make use of it. We know enough about gravity to be able to weigh things and predict the motion of comets and asteroids, for example, even though we don't know for sure which of the available theories is closest to the truth. We don't fully understand quantum physics but we know that it's real and we know enough about it to be able to create television and computers and lasers. We don't fully understand light but we know it's real (or you wouldn't be reading this) and we know enough about how it interacts with matter so that we can make solar cells and telescopes.

Evolution is real; we see it all the time. It happens slowly, so that we don't usually notice it, but over decades and centuries it becomes more and more apparent. The usual example that schoolkids are given (at least, this is one that my biology teacher taught many many many years ago) is a species of moth found in northern England. At the beginning of the eighteenth century most of these moths were light grey, a natural camouflage that made them difficult to see against the light-coloured bark of the trees they landed on. In the middle of the century the Industrial Revolution came to town and with it, the soot of ten thousand coal-burning factories covered the bark of the trees of the region. By the end of the century the moths were predominantly dark, so that moths were still camouflaged against the soot-blackened bark of the trees. The species had evolved - adapted to the changing conditions of its environment. That's just one simple example but there are countless others.

Evolution is a fact, as undeniable as light and gravitation and the quantum.

There have been a number of theories to explain how evolution works but by far the most successful is the one that began with the ideas of Charles Darwin - the theory commonly called Natural Selection, or Survival of the Fittest.

I'm not going into detail about it here because that's not the point. I will say, though, that I thought I understood the theory but I didn't really, as well as I should have. The whole thing became far more clear - and elegant, and beautiful - after reading Richard Dawkins' book The Blind Watchmaker, which I can't recommend highly enough. If you haven't read this book, you should.

Natural Selection may be "just a theory" but it's a damn good one; it explains the existence and diversity of life on this planet better than any other theory currently available. It's testable and falsifiable, and over three hundred years of challenges and tests have not shown it to be wrong. Other theories, such as Lamarckism, were proved wrong a long time ago.

Now we have something else. It's called Creationism and basically it says that the Biblical account of the creation of life is literally the one and only true explanation. In an attempt to make it scientifically acceptable creationism has... well, evolved, into "Scientific Creationism" and more recently "Intelligent Design", or "ID". Its proponents are trying to convince school boards and others that it is as scientific a theory as Natural Selection, but it isn't; ID is not a scientific theory. The very nature of ID is such that there is no experiment that can be devised that would prove it wrong; in essence, everything becomes evidence that supports ID.

For example, ID proposes that the Earth was created by an intelligent power (read, "God") about six thousand years ago. When presented with fossils and carbon-dated samples that can be proved older than that, a truly scientific theory would crumble, but not ID; to get around this minor wrinkle, ID'ers say that the intelligent power deliberately faked the old rocks and fossils to test faith. Why an intelligent power would deliberately set juvenile traps like this is not explained, but the point is that it doesn't matter what evidence is presented, ID always has some way to "explain" the inconvenient facts.

Having failed in the past to persuade the school boards that ID is a valid scientific theory, its proponents have resorted to dirty tricks such as getting their supporters voted onto those same school boards so that they can rewrite the rules. Now, in Kansas, they're trying to not only rewrite the rules but change the very definition of what science is so that they can have their ideas taught to children as if they were as valid and scientific as Natural Selection. The children, who don't have the skills to tell truth from junk, will end up believing the ID doctrine and most of them will carry those beliefs through to adulthood.

In an scientifically advanced country this is a scandal. The problem is that, as scientifically advanced as this country is, individual citizens have for the most part not been educated in science well enough to tell the difference between real science and pseudoscientific claptrap. As a result, the legislators and parents (and in many cases the teachers, sadly) are just not able to tell the ID crowd where to shove their doctrine.

The ID'ers have a right to their beliefs. What they do not have a right to is to demand that those beliefs are taught as scientific fact in science classes. These teachings should be kept in religious classes, where they belong.

Eclipse Report

Following on from yesterday's post, we did get a glimpse of the eclipse at about 5:20pm (so I did convert those Universal Times to CDT correctly after all). I used a pair of binoculars (and no, I didn't try looking at the eclipse through them - I may be a bit of an idiot at times but I'm not terminally daft), holding them so that an image was projected onto a flat piece of wood in the shade. The image was wobbly because I was hand-holding the bins, but you could still see clearly that there was a chunk out of the side of the sun.

Bad floppies, spam and scram

Well the way things are panning out I'm not getting much time to write blogs - Kate and I were talking about this just this morning - so I think the solution is rather than writing full-length articles I'll just add short notes to a text file as and when I get a couple of minutes, then post a batch at a time. With that in mind...

Looks like the floppy drive on my office workstation has bad head alignment - it'll read and write floppies but they won't read properly on another machine. Val just tried one of my disks in his machine and it's shot. He showed me a little pocket-keyring-thingy that you plug into a USB port and it works like a 128Mb removable disk. He says he got it on sale for about ten bucks. I've seen them before and I thought they were just a gimmick, but now I'm converted - in the words of Confucius, "I gotta get me one of these".

Earthlink have announced that they'll be using DomainKeys as an anti-spam measure, which I think is great news. The alternatives - SPF and SenderID - are too weak and won't work if a mail gets relayed through an intermediate SMTP server, and that means that SPF and SenderID will probably have to change to fix the problems. The way I see it the more they have to tweak it to get it to work reliably, the more chances there are for the spammers to find ways round it. Call me cynical but here's a prediction: Microsoft (who are pushing SenderID) will start providing add-ons to strengten SenderID, and these will be Windoze-only so that they can then say that the Linux/open-source alternatives don't work as well. If I'm right it'll be all the more reason for the industry to go the DomainKeys direction. Also I read that a company in Atlanta checked a sample of 2 million mails and found out that (1) only 5% of senders had installed SPF records on their DNS servers (although that's likely to increase rapidly) and (2) of those 5%, only one out of four were "legitimate" mailers - the rest were spammers. So until the ISPs start building reputation databases to weed out the spamming domains, this means that if you get a mail from someone who has a legit SPF record, there's a 75% chance it's spam.

More on the spam front - I just saw a CNN headline where Bill Gates claims he's the most spammed person on Earth, at 4 million emails a day. Yeah, Bill, you just have to be better than everyone else... :)

NASA tested their Scramjet X-43A yesterday and broke the speed record - 6,600 MPH, or almost mach 10. To put it another way, Dallas to London in less than an hour. Freeow!
