Working for Steamwheedle

We left things with a handful of low-level quests in the Barrens, all given out by characters in and around Ratchet. As low-level quests we knew they wouldn't give us much XP but the idea was to boost our reputation with the Steamwheedle Cartel factions. One of the quests we'd finished up before had pushed our rep with one of the factions (Gadgetzan, I think) to 'Friendly' and we want to do the same with one or two of the others.

The first quest - chosen because it was the closest to Ratchet - was to gather some raptor horns. We headed out of Ratchet to the plain to the northwest and found a couple of raptors, but they were few and far between and didn't drop many horns. According to QuestHelper there were more to the south so I rode down there to have a look around, and found a whole raptor village; Kate followed me down there and finding the horns was quick work after that.

Next stop was the Wailing Caverns to the northwest, to take a bottle of 99-year old port from Mad Magglish. We were exploring the caverns when Magglish suddenly appeared next to me - he'd either been stealthed or perhaps someone else had got him a little earlier and he just happened to respawn while I was standing there. Anyway he got whacked and I got the port, and we waited for him to reappear so that Kate could get him. And waited. And waited. I was about to suggest moving on and coming back later, when he showed up again and that was that.

We didn't have a lot of time left but we decided to take care of one last quest in the far north, to collect a mysterious piece of kit called a Samophlange from a Venture Co. installation. To do this you have to operate a console then close three valves, then go back to the console at which point you find you need to get the key from Tinkerer Sniggles nearby. With the key you can then open the console and grab the Samophlange. All extremely easy at our levels, although I imagine it'd be quite a challenge for the level 14-15 players this quest is plainly aimed at, since at every step you're being attacked by the Venture Co. guys trying to stop you.

Our time was up; we headed back to Ratchet and closed the three quests out, and both got a reputation boost to 'Friendly' with the Ratchet faction. We still have a couple of quests left to do, but since we already got the rep boost I don't know that it's worth spending any more time in this area. Instead we may abandon those and take the boat to Booty Bay to take on a few quests over there - that should get us another rep boost with the Booty Bay faction as well as giving us a chance to explore around Stranglethorn Vale, which I think is higher level than the Barrens and so would bring us more XP along the way. We'll see.
